Insider guide
Shopping Lower East Side.
The story
The Lower East Side's shopping runs along Orchard, Ludlow and Rivington Streets between Houston and Canal, plus Essex Street down to Delancey. Orchard Street is the spine, with designer boutiques, vintage and secondhand books from the Canal end up toward Houston.
Sandy Liang, Kallmeyer and The Frankie Shop sell their own womenswear. Desert Vintage, Pilgrim and Edith Machinist sell vintage chosen to wear with a modern wardrobe. Colbo covers menswear, and Russ & Daughters and Essex Market feed you between shops. It suits shoppers who like independent designers and good vintage.
What to Expect
Start at the Canal end of Orchard Street. Aedes Perfumery has jewel-box displays of fragrance, and Sandy Liang's flagship is a few doors up. Desert Vintage sells clothing mostly from the early 1900s to the 1970s. November 19 has new and vintage home goods, gifts and reworked vintage clothing, and Sweet Pickle Books sells used books and jars of pickles. Colbo carries its New York-made house line with Gramicci, Meals and Small Talk Studio, plus magazines, rare records and ceramics.
Farther up, Pilgrim mixes new and vintage designer womenswear, Kallmeyer makes womenswear staples in New York, and Moscot sells its own frames with walk-in vision tests. The Frankie Shop, known for oversized suiting, is a block off Orchard, and Edith Machinist sells vintage clothing and accessories. Near Houston, Assembly New York stocks its owner's deconstructed basics, and P&T Knitwear is a bookstore with a cafe, despite the name. Cactus Store is a seasonal greenhouse for rare cacti.
Best Time to Visit
The food shops open early. Russ & Daughters opens at 8am daily and closes at 4pm, and Essex Market opens at 8am (10am Sunday) and stays open until 9pm Thursday to Saturday, though vendors keep their own hours. Moscot opens at 10am (noon Sunday) and does full eye exams Tuesday to Thursday, 11am to 5pm. Most boutiques and vintage stores open late morning and run into the evening, but many don't post hours, so check before a special trip.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at Russ & Daughters for lox and bagels. Walk down Orchard to Moscot, then Colbo for an espresso while you browse. Finish at Sweet Pickle Books and Desert Vintage.
Where to Eat
Katz's is the deli the MICHELIN inspectors call a true New York institution; take a ticket at the door for pastrami, matzo ball soup and latkes, and come off-peak. Russ & Daughters Cafe is the sit-down version, with chocolate babka French toast; it is walk-in only. Dhamaka, at Essex Market, cooks spicy, rustic Indian home-style food. On Orchard, Una Pizza Napoletana (175) makes Neapolitan pies (come early for a walk-in table), and Sami & Susu (190) is strongest on lamb. 8282 is a loud room with Korean-inflected sharing plates.
