Insider guide
Shopping SoHo.
The story
SoHo is the grid of cast-iron loft blocks between Houston and Canal Streets. Broadway carries the big brand stores, and the cobblestoned side streets hold the rest: Prince, Spring, Greene, Mercer, Wooster and Crosby. It suits a long walking day that mixes global brands with bookstores, vintage designer resale and design objects.
Prince Street has Apple SoHo, Polo Ralph Lauren and McNally Jackson. The luxury houses sit on Wooster and Greene, Spring Street has the MoMA Design Store, and Crosby Street has the bookstore cafe and surf shop.
What to Expect
Start at the north end on Prince Street. Apple SoHo is a two-story store with a glass staircase and Genius Bar. Polo Ralph Lauren does made-to-measure tailoring, and McNally Jackson is the independent bookstore. Turn onto Greene and Wooster for Louis Vuitton, Warby Parker for glasses and in-store eye exams, and Chanel, which carries everything from ready-to-wear to the Les Exclusifs fragrances.
Heading south, the MoMA Design Store sells design objects and MoMA exclusives, and Alo has yoga wear. Reformation does dresses in eco-friendly fabrics and repurposed vintage, and Byredo sells perfume and candles and runs fragrance consultations. What Goes Around Comes Around is the luxury vintage stop, down to vintage Chanel. GANNI sits at the quieter south end near Canal. On Crosby Street, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe sells used books, vinyl and art books, and Saturdays NYC has surfboards and its own menswear. On Broadway, Arc'teryx resells refurbished gear, and Pearl River Mart has Asian housewares and gifts.
Best Time to Visit
Most shops open at 11am and close at 7pm, with Sunday hours of noon to 6pm. A few run later. Reformation and Arc'teryx stay open to 8pm Monday to Saturday, Apple to 9pm (8pm Sunday), and McNally Jackson to 9pm every day, so Prince Street is the place to finish an evening. For an early start, Apple opens at 9am and Arc'teryx and the MoMA Design Store at 10am. Housing Works closes at 5pm on Sundays and can close early for events. Patagonia, Alo, Saturdays NYC and Warby Parker don't post hours.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at the MoMA Design Store and go downstairs. Walk west to Byredo, then north up Greene Street past Reformation to Louis Vuitton. Finish on Prince Street at McNally Jackson, open until 9pm.
Where to Eat
Le Coucou is Daniel Rose's French dining room with a large open kitchen and classics such as pike quenelles in lobster sauce. Torrisi, inside the Puck Building, serves Italian-American cooking with polished service. C as in Charlie is a small spot with Southern and Korean sharing plates like harissa-glazed baby back ribs. Laliko, over in the West Village, is Georgian; order the adjaruli khachapuri and khinkali dumplings.
