Insider guide

Shopping Flatiron.

The story

Shopping here covers Fifth Avenue and Broadway from 14th to 23rd Street, plus Union Square and the side streets off it. Union Square and its Greenmarket anchor the south end, and big bookstores, home-goods shops and brand stores line the avenues north of it.

The Strand, Barnes & Noble and Books of Wonder sit near the square, ABC Carpet & Home and Fishs Eddy are up Broadway, and Fifth Avenue has Buck Mason and Ann Taylor. Eataly and the LEGO Store share 200 Fifth Avenue at the top. It suits readers, home shoppers and anyone who wants a farmers market with their shopping.

What to Expect

Start at Union Square. On market days the Greenmarket fills East 17th Street and Union Square West with regional growers, bakers and producers, plus cooking demos. Barnes & Noble has four floors with toys, vinyl, a café and print-on-demand. South of the square, the Strand sells used and new books, with a separate Rare Book Room.

Walk up Broadway to Paragon Sports, with a full soccer floor plus tennis, ski and outdoor departments. ABC Carpet & Home (888) trades on four levels, and Fishs Eddy (889) sells mugs and plates with jokey sayings and New York motifs. On Fifth, Buck Mason's women's flagship is at 140, and Ann Taylor (141) books free styling sessions by phone. Books of Wonder has a gallery of original children's book art. At 200 Fifth, between 23rd and 24th, the LEGO Store has a Pick & Build wall, and Eataly is a 48,000-square-foot Italian marketplace with 13 restaurants and counters and cooking classes.

Best Time to Visit

Most stores open around 10am or 11am and close at 7pm, but the bookstores run later: the Strand to 9pm daily and Barnes & Noble to 9pm, or 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Eataly is open 7am to 11pm. The Greenmarket runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 8am to 6pm, year-round; the farmers change by day, so check that day's market map. At the Strand, the Rare Book Room keeps shorter hours: weekdays 10am to 5pm, weekends to 6pm.

If You Only Have an Hour

On a market day, walk through the Greenmarket, then into Barnes & Noble. Head west on 17th Street to Books of Wonder, then over to Broadway for Fishs Eddy and ABC Carpet & Home.

Where to Eat

Four one-star MICHELIN restaurants are close by. Gramercy Tavern has a walk-in front Tavern that's good for lunch. Rezdôra does handmade Emilia-Romagna pasta. Cote is a Korean steakhouse where first-timers are pointed to the Butcher's Feast, and Casa Mono is a small tapas room off Gramercy Park. Two Bib Gourmand picks are easier on the budget: La Dong for banh mi and pho, and Coqodaq for Korean fried chicken, though tables there are hard to book.
