Insider guide

Shopping Herald Square.

The story

Herald Square is Manhattan's mass-market shopping strip. The stores run along West 34th Street from Fifth Avenue to Ninth Avenue, plus Broadway and Sixth Avenue between 32nd and 36th Streets. Macy's anchors it, with big stores for Primark, Target, H&M and Zara close by.

The east end, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, has Zara, ALDO and Build-A-Bear Workshop, with Ghirardelli in the Empire State Building. Around Herald Square are Macy's, Primark, Target and Sephora, with H&M and Urban Outfitters on Broadway. Farther west are DSW and B&H Photo & Video. It suits practical, budget-minded shoppers and anyone who needs long hours.

What to Expect

Macy's Herald Square, billed as the world's largest department store, is steps from Primark's NYC flagship at 150 W 34th, which sells low-priced fashion, homeware and beauty. The building at 112 W 34th holds Target (with order pickup and same-day delivery in Manhattan), Sephora and a Foot Locker. On Broadway, H&M spreads kids', baby, maternity, men's and women's clothing plus beauty and home over three floors. Just north of 34th, 1333 Broadway has Urban Outfitters, with UO Home and a Music + Tech section, and Dr. Martens. Past Herald Square Park, Dave & Adam's is billed as NYC's largest trading card store, with sports memorabilia too.

Toward Fifth Avenue, Zara and ALDO share a block with Build-A-Bear Workshop, the brand's only permanent Manhattan location. Ghirardelli's first New York shop, in the Empire State Building, does sundaes, shakes and pick-your-own bags of chocolate squares. Head west for DSW and its discount designer shoes, and on to B&H Photo & Video at 420 Ninth Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

Hours here are long. Most stores open at 9am or 10am and close at 9pm or 10pm, with Sunday closings between 7pm and 9pm. Target runs 8am to 11pm every day, H&M 9am to 11pm and Primark 9am to 10pm. Macy's stays open to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. For an early start, Ess-A-Bagel on West 32nd Street opens at 6am and the Starbucks Reserve Roastery at 6:30am. The one schedule to plan around is B&H Photo & Video, which closes at 1pm on Friday and all day Saturday.

If You Only Have an Hour

Start at Macy's Herald Square, then step over to Primark. Walk up Broadway to H&M and Urban Outfitters. Finish at Dave & Adam's, or with a waffle from Wafels & Dinges at the park's 35th Street entrance.

Where to Eat

Joo Ok holds two MICHELIN stars for a quiet Korean tasting menu that mixes tradition with modern touches. The rest are Bib Gourmand picks. Cho Dang Gol is known for house-made soft tofu. HanGawi is a calm, shoes-off Korean vegetarian room; build wraps from the ssam bap platter. Tonchin serves tonkotsu ramen with house-made noodles, and Peppercorn Station does Sichuan dishes for sharing, like fish fillet with pickled cabbage.
