Insider guide
Shopping Meatpacking.
The story
The Meatpacking District's shopping runs along Gansevoort, Washington, West 13th and West 14th Streets, from Ninth Avenue west to the High Line. Gansevoort Street is the luxury row, with Hermès, Saint Laurent, Audemars Piguet and Marni. Washington Street has watches and denim, and 14th Street has Apple and Fjällräven near Ninth Avenue.
It suits a shopper after designer clothes, watches and beauty, with RH's furniture gallery and Chelsea Market's food hall on Ninth Avenue for a change of pace. The High Line runs north from Gansevoort Street, so you can walk in along it.
What to Expect
Gansevoort Street holds most of the luxury. Marni sits at the foot of the street with its bold silhouettes and prints. two:minds is a men's and women's concept store of designer labels, and Theory sells wardrobe essentials for both. Hermès carries apparel, handbags, scarves, shoes, home goods and fragrance. Audemars Piguet shows its Swiss watches. Aesop has a central basin for testing and a private one for consultations, Belstaff has a restoration workshop in the store, and Saint Laurent has ready-to-wear and accessories for men and women.
On Washington Street, Maman is a café and bakery, Warby Parker (819) sells its own glasses and sunglasses at set prices, Paige (869) has its jeans and clothing, and Breitling (875) is a watch boutique styled as a modern industrial loft. On West 13th, AllSaints sells its men's and women's collections, and The Shop at The Standard has Standard-label clothing, art and gifts beside the High Line. On 14th Street, Apple is a multi-floor glass store, and Fjällräven carries the full line. On Ninth Avenue, RH New York, The Gallery is six levels of furniture with a rooftop restaurant, and Chelsea Market has food vendors and shops for books, clothing and decor.
Best Time to Visit
Most boutiques open around 11am and close at 7pm, with Sundays ending between 5pm and 6:30pm. Hermès is closed Mondays, so save a luxury day for Tuesday to Saturday. Marni keeps shorter hours, noon to 6pm, and Audemars Piguet closes at 6pm. Apple opens at 9am (10am Sunday) and runs to 9pm (8pm Sunday), and Maman opens earliest, at 7:30am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. RH, Fjällräven, AllSaints and Chelsea Market don't post hours on our list, so check before you go.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start with coffee at Maman. Walk to Gansevoort Street for Hermès (46, not Mondays), Aesop (60) and Belstaff (62). Finish at RH and take the glass elevator up through the atrium to the rooftop.
