Insider guide

Shopping West Village.

The story

The West Village's shopping runs along Bleecker Street from Christopher Street to Bank Street, with more on West 10th Street, Christopher Street, Greenwich Avenue and Sixth Avenue at 9th Street. Bleecker carries the clothing and beauty boutiques, and the side streets hold the small specialists.

On Bleecker you'll find Loeffler Randall, Aesop, Buck Mason, Anine Bing, Reiss, Marine Layer and James Perse. Off it are a bookshop, a hosting-supplies shop, a jeweler, a chocolate maker and an apothecary. It suits an afternoon that mixes clothes shopping with small gift stops.

What to Expect

Near the Christopher Street subway, Reiss has upscale clothing for men and women, Buck Mason sells its American-style menswear basics, and Anine Bing has jeans, tops and dresses. Aesop is the brand's signature store, with a brass sink and leather floors. At 343 Bleecker St, Loeffler Randall sells shoes, bags and jewelry plus store-exclusive ready-to-wear. Farther up are Marine Layer and James Perse for casual clothing. Farther down Bleecker, Murray's Cheese has a large counter of cheeses.

Off Bleecker, Rag & Bone sells men's and women's clothing and jeans, and Tarin Thomas makes rings and necklaces that pair gemstones with simple metalwork. On West 10th Street, Three Lives & Company is a corner bookshop where staff hand-sell fiction, and Big Night has colored martini glasses, cocktail napkins, candles and ceramics. Greenwich Avenue has Otte for clothing, shoes and jewelry from small luxury labels, and Li-Lac Chocolates for chocolate Empire State Buildings. C.O. Bigelow is an apothecary with its own balms and lotions, and Screaming Mimis sells vintage dresses from every decade.

Best Time to Visit

Boutiques generally open 11am to 7pm, and some open at 10am on weekends, including Buck Mason. For an early start, C.O. Bigelow opens at 9am every day (until 7pm Monday to Saturday and 5:30pm Sunday). Aesop is open 11am to 7pm daily. For a late finish, Screaming Mimis runs noon to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 1pm to 7pm Sunday. Many shops here, including Three Lives, Big Night, Murray's and Otte, don't post hours on our list, so check first.

If You Only Have an Hour

From the Christopher Street station, walk up Bleecker to Buck Mason (329), Aesop (341) and Loeffler Randall (343). Then detour one block to West 10th Street for Three Lives & Company and Big Night.

Where to Eat

Two one-star restaurants that MICHELIN lists among the least expensive starred places in New York are close by: Jeju Noodle Bar, a Korean noodle bar, and Semma, which is Indian. Laliko is Georgian; order the adjaruli khachapuri and khinkali dumplings.
