Insider guide

Shopping Madison Ave.

The story

Madison Avenue's shopping runs from East 57th Street up to East 86th Street, on the avenue and the side streets just off it. The fashion flagships sit at the south end, the middle blocks mix fragrance houses, home stores and galleries, and the 80s turn quieter, with food shops and linens.

Montblanc, Celine and Hermès sit between 59th and 63rd Streets, and Ralph Lauren has a cluster of stores at 72nd. Above that come Sotheby's, Gagosian and more than a dozen perfume shops. It suits unhurried shoppers who want designer clothes, fragrance and art in one long walk.

What to Expect

At the south end, Celine's store at 650 Madison is done in lava stone and black granite, with furniture designed by Hedi Slimane, and Hermès is at 706. Peserico (783) carries the Italian label's collections over two floors, Creed (794) sells fragrance, and Matouk shows home furnishings at 20 East 67th Street. At 72nd Street, Ralph Lauren has two main stores (867 and 888) plus Baby (872) and Children (878) shops. The RealReal (870) is the lower-cost way into the labels sold new on the avenue, Bond No. 9 New York (897) makes New York-themed perfumes, and Arader Galleries on East 72nd sells antique maps and prints.

Farther up, Kirna Zabête (943) is an independent boutique, Sotheby's (945) does estimates and consignment, and L'Objet (950) sells home and tabletop. Zitomer (969) is a neighborhood department store and pharmacy, Diptyque (971) sells candles and fragrance, and 980 Madison holds Gagosian, Nahmad Contemporary, Tanya Taylor and Me & Em. Past La Maison du Chocolat (1018), the north end has Lobel's of New York (1096) for meat, Schweitzer Linens (1097) and Michael's Luxury Consignment (1125), with authenticated designer clothing, handbags and jewelry from labels like Chanel, Hermès and Prada.

Best Time to Visit

Most boutiques open at 10am or 11am and close at 6pm or 7pm Monday to Saturday, with Sunday starts around noon. Several galleries close at 5pm. Hermès is closed Sundays, and Lobel's and Schweitzer Linens are open weekdays only, so do the north end Monday to Friday.

Check the calendar. Fragrance Week in late March brings launches, samples and free walking tours. Madison Avenue Design Week in mid-May adds consultations at home stores. The free Gallery Walk opens more than 40 galleries on spring and fall Saturdays. On Miracle on Madison, a Saturday in early December, 20% of participating stores' sales go to MSK Kids.

If You Only Have an Hour

Start at Ralph Lauren at 72nd Street and walk north to Bond No. 9 New York (897). Continue to Kirna Zabête (943), then L'Objet (950) and Diptyque (971). Finish with coffee at Sant Ambroeus, between 77th and 78th Streets.

Where to Eat

Daniel is Daniel Boulud's formal French dining room, with one MICHELIN star and multicourse menus. Café Boulud, also with one star, is an Art Deco-styled French room where black sea bass wrapped in potato and tarte Tatin are typical. For something more casual, Bohemian Spirit, a Bib Gourmand pick, is a Czech beer hall serving dill-scented borscht and strawberry dumplings with gingerbread.
