Insider guide

Shopping Fifth Avenue.

The story

Fifth Avenue's shopping run covers the blocks from 49th Street up to 60th Street, plus the first few doors of East 57th Street. It holds the city's biggest flagships, two grand department stores and a tight cluster of jewelers and watch dealers around 57th Street.

Saks Fifth Avenue sits at the south end, across from Rockefeller Center. The jewelers take over from 55th Street up to 57th, and the top end has Bergdorf Goodman and 767 Fifth, home to Apple and Moncler. It suits anyone who wants the famous names in one straight walk, from window shoppers to buyers booking a ring appointment.

What to Expect

Start at Saks Fifth Avenue, with a whole floor of shoes (the 10022-SHOE floor) and more than 100 beauty brands on 2. Walking north, Cartier Fifth Avenue Mansion sells jewelry, watches, leather goods and bridal, with a fourth-floor salon for repairs and engraving. Nike NYC House of Innovation is six stories with a large Sneaker Lab, and Uniqlo is the biggest retail store on the avenue by NYC Tourism's count.

At 55th Street, Wempe in The Peninsula Hotel is an official Rolex and Patek Philippe dealer. Harry Winston books bridal and high-jewelry appointments online, and Gucci anchors Trump Tower at 56th. Tiffany & Co. The Landmark has engagement rings, a Patek Philippe salon and the Blue Box Café, and does engraving and jewelry cleaning. Bvlgari adds watches, eyewear and fragrance. At 57th, Mikimoto sells cultured pearls in the Crown Building, Van Cleef & Arpels has an Art Deco interior, and Louis Vuitton is just off the avenue at 6 East 57th Street. Bergdorf Goodman pairs couture with accessories, bedding and housewares. At 767 Fifth, Moncler's largest store worldwide (opened September 2026) has Grenoble ski and hiking gear upstairs, and Apple sits beneath the glass cube.

Best Time to Visit

Most flagships and jewelers open at 10am or 11am and close between 6pm and 8pm Monday to Saturday, with shorter Sunday hours from about noon. Tiffany stays open latest of the jewelers, to 8pm Monday to Saturday. Harry Winston and Van Cleef & Arpels close at 6pm (5pm on Sunday), and Cartier closes at 4pm on Thursdays. Apple Fifth Avenue is open 24 hours, so it is the one stop you can make early or late. Bergdorf Goodman and several flagships don't post hours, so call ahead.

If You Only Have an Hour

Start at Cartier and walk north past Wempe at 55th Street to Tiffany & Co. The Landmark. Continue to Van Cleef & Arpels, then Bergdorf Goodman. Finish under the glass cube at Apple Fifth Avenue, with Moncler in the same building.

Where to Eat

Le Bernardin, with three MICHELIN stars, is Eric Ripert's seafood room, known for its yellowfin tuna. The Modern, with two stars, faces the MoMA sculpture garden and serves seasonal cooking that includes its "eggs on eggs on eggs." Aquavit, also with two stars, serves Emma Bengtsson's Scandinavian tasting menus around an open kitchen.
