Rockefeller Center to 52nd Street

Fifth Avenue's shopping stretch in Midtown runs about a dozen blocks, from 46th Street up to Grand Army Plaza at 59th Street, the southeast corner of Central Park. The southern blocks hold sportswear and beauty flagships and the shops of Rockefeller Center. North of 50th Street the avenue turns to jewelers and luxury houses, and it ends with Bergdorf Goodman and the Apple cube. This walk goes south to north so the heavier shopping, and the better places to sit down, come at the end.

Most stores on the avenue open at 10am or 11am and close between 6pm and 8pm, with shorter Sunday hours from about noon. The jewelers close earliest, often at 6pm, so if a ring or a watch is the reason for the trip, do that part first or book ahead. Apple Fifth Avenue never closes. For the luxury blocks alone, see our Fifth Avenue district page; for the houses one block east, our Madison Avenue walk picks up at 57th Street.

46th to 49th Street: Sneakers, Beauty and Rockefeller Center

Start at the adidas Flagship Store New York (565 Fifth Ave, at 46th St), open daily 10am to 8pm. NYC Tourism describes four floors with shoe customization, a gait-analysis running shoe finder and an indoor track, and staff can order sizes that are not on the floor through Endless Aisle. A block north, Sephora Fifth Avenue (northwest corner of Fifth Ave and 47th St) takes the whole retail floor of a neo-Gothic building and carries more than 300 brands.

At 49th Street, Rockefeller Center opens off the west side of the avenue. Alo Rockefeller Center (600 Fifth Ave, at 48th St) is the Los Angeles activewear brand's new flagship. Inside the complex are the family stops. FAO Schwarz (Rockefeller Center) is three levels of toys beside the spot where the Christmas tree stands. LEGO Store Rockefeller Center has a Pick A Brick wall for loose pieces and LEGO Exclusive sets, and Nintendo NY is a two-level store where you can try new Switch games before you buy.

Two shops make Rockefeller Center worth a visit without kids. McNally Jackson Rockefeller Center is the largest store of the independent bookseller founded in Nolita in 2004, with a Goods For The Study stationery section planned, and it is open until 9pm daily. Rough Trade Rockefeller Center is split in two: Above sells new vinyl, and Below, on the Rink Level, sells used records and CDs, turntables and hi-fi gear.

49th to 52nd Street: Saks, Watches and the Cartier Mansion

Across the avenue, Saks Fifth Avenue (611 Fifth Ave) faces Rockefeller Center. The store's highlights are 10022-SHOE, a whole floor of shoes, and more than 100 beauty brands on the second floor. Saks is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 7pm and Sunday noon to 6pm. Steps away, Citizen Flagship Store New York (605 Fifth Ave) is Citizen Watch America's first North American flagship, with Citizen, Bulova, Accutron, Frederique Constant and Alpina under one roof. It is a useful comparison stop before the luxury blocks, with prices well below the houses further north.

At 52nd Street, Cartier Fifth Avenue Mansion (653 Fifth Ave) has been in this former private mansion since 1917. It sells jewelry, watches, leather goods and bridal, and the fourth floor is a service salon for repairs and engraving. Note the short Thursday: it closes at 4pm that day. Opposite, the Nike NYC House of Innovation (650 Fifth Ave) is six floors and 68,000 square feet, with a Sneaker Lab, Nike By You customization and an Expert Studio; our sneaker guide explains how Nike's SNKRS Pass works. Uniqlo 5th Ave (666 Fifth Ave), has more than 89,000 square feet of shopping space; NYC Tourism calls it the biggest retail store on Fifth Avenue.

For lunch, walk a block west to The Modern (9 W 53rd St), the two-MICHELIN-star restaurant at MoMA facing the sculpture garden. Book ahead.

The Jewelers to Grand Army Plaza

53rd to 57th Street: The Jewelers

The jewelry stretch is the reason many people come. It helps to know there are two kinds of store here. A brand boutique, such as Cartier, Harry Winston or Van Cleef & Arpels, sells that house's own pieces and handles its own service and repairs. An authorized dealer sells several brands at once. Wempe (The Peninsula Hotel, southwest corner of Fifth Ave and 55th St) is the German watch and jewelry retailer on the hotel's corner, and it is an official Rolex and Patek Philippe dealer. If you are after a particular model, call ahead and ask about availability before you travel. The hotel above it, The Peninsula New York (700 Fifth Ave, at 55th St), has a spa, a top-floor pool and the Pen-Top Bar if you are staying the night.

Swarovski (680 Fifth Ave) is one of the avenue's newer tenants and also uses its space for podcast tapings and talks. Harry Winston (701 Fifth Ave) is the jeweler's New York salon; you can book bridal and high-jewelry appointments online before you go. Gucci holds the street level of Trump Tower on the northeast corner of 56th Street.

At 57th Street the big names cluster around the intersection. Tiffany & Co. The Landmark (727 Fifth Ave) has been Tiffany's flagship since 1940 and reopened after a redesign in April 2023. Inside are engagement rings, a Patek Philippe salon and the Blue Box Café. Across the avenue, the Crown Building holds Bvlgari (730 Fifth Ave), for jewelry, watches and fragrance, and Mikimoto (Crown Building, southwest corner of Fifth Ave and 57th St). Mikimoto's founder produced the first cultured pearl in Japan in 1893.

A few steps east on 57th, Louis Vuitton (6 E 57th St) is the brand's flagship, with menswear and womenswear. Upstairs, Le Café Louis Vuitton (6 E 57th St, 4th floor) is a sit-down café with a menu guided by chefs Arnaud Donckele and Maxime Frédéric.

57th to 59th Street: Bergdorf, Moncler and Apple

Van Cleef & Arpels (744 Fifth Ave) sits on the street level of the Bergdorf Goodman Building, the house's home since 1940, with an Art Deco interior and engraving done in store. Next is Bergdorf Goodman (754 Fifth Ave), New York's single-store department store: eight floors of women's collections in the main building, plus three floors for men across Fifth Avenue. BG Restaurant inside serves high tea daily. In the men's store, Goodman's Bar at Bergdorf Goodman (Bergdorf Goodman Men's Store, 2nd floor) serves brunch, lunch and drinks with a long wine list. Bergdorf takes appointments and offers same-day delivery, which helps if you do not want to carry bags all afternoon.

The walk ends at the GM Building. Moncler (767 Fifth Ave) opened its largest store in the world here in September 2026, with the main collection and Genius on the ground floor and Grenoble ski and mountain wear upstairs. In the plaza out front, Apple Fifth Avenue (767 Fifth Ave) sits under the glass cube and is open 24 hours, with Genius Bar appointments and Today at Apple sessions. It is the easiest place on the avenue to meet friends late.

Subway In, Walk North

Getting There and When to Go

Take the subway. The Fifth Avenue Association lists 5 Av/59 St (N, R, W) for the north end, 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr (B, D, F, M) for Saks and Rockefeller Center, and 5 Av/53 St, 57 St on Sixth Avenue and Lexington Av/51 St in between. The F and M swapped routes in December 2025, so check the MTA map for the 53rd and 57th Street stops.

Since 2022 the avenue has closed to cars on December Sundays for Holiday Open Streets: three Sundays in 2022 and 2023, and one day since 2024. Our holiday windows guide has this year's dates. Looking further ahead, a $402 million redesign of Fifth Avenue from 42nd to 59th Street, with wider sidewalks and new trees, is planned, with construction due to start in 2028.

For more around Midtown, Herald Square has Macy's and the 34th Street chains, and our hotels guide lists places to stay within walking distance.
