Insider guide

Shopping Tribeca.

The story

Tribeca's shopping is spread across a handful of streets between Canal and Chambers: Franklin, Duane and Hudson, plus Greenwich, Warren and Church. The neighborhood borders the Hudson River on its west side.

Duane Street has the fashion, with Nili Lotan's two stores across Duane Park from each other and 180 The Store nearby. Greenwich Street has La Garçonne's women's and men's shops and the Saturday Greenmarket. Warren Street is for specialists: Japanese knives at Korin, mysteries at The Mysterious Bookshop and pens at Fountain Pen Hospital. It suits shoppers who want designer clothes, good tools and a farmers market in one trip.

What to Expect

Around Duane Park, Nili Lotan Tribeca carries the New York designer's women's ready-to-wear and seasonal denim. Across the park, Nili Lotan Denim has denim staples, a rack of her men's line and an espresso bar. 180 The Store is a retail and event space mixing clothing, housewares, jewelry, beauty and plants with rotating pop-ups. On Franklin Street, Shinola is the Detroit brand's store, and it hosts in-store events too.

La Garçonne stocks established and emerging designers plus its house label, La Garçonne Moderne; the men's shop is at 504 Greenwich St. On Warren Street, Korin sells imported chef knives, sharpening stones, tableware and barware, and offers sharpening, engraving and hands-on classes. The Mysterious Bookshop has new mysteries, rare signed first editions, Sherlockiana and its own exclusive novellas. Fountain Pen Hospital sells and repairs fountain pens and fine writing instruments.

Best Time to Visit

Boutiques generally open at 10am or 11am and close at 6pm or 7pm, with Sunday hours of noon to 6pm. Watch the closed days. La Garçonne and 180 The Store are closed Mondays, Korin is closed Fridays and Sundays, and Fountain Pen Hospital is closed Sundays and shuts at 5pm. Saturday works best: the Tribeca Greenmarket sets up on Greenwich Street between Chambers and Duane from 8am to 2pm, and every shop on our list that posts hours is open. The market also runs Wednesdays from April through December.

If You Only Have an Hour

On a Saturday, start at the Greenmarket on Greenwich Street. Walk to Duane Park for Nili Lotan Tribeca and an espresso at Nili Lotan Denim, then look into 180 The Store. Finish on Warren Street at Korin and The Mysterious Bookshop.

Where to Eat

All four restaurants on our list are in the MICHELIN Guide. Huso is Buddha Lo's exact, polished tasting menu. Jungsik is a cool Korean dining room whose menu includes raw striped jack with white kimchi. L'Abeille is Mitsunobu Nagae's French cooking with Japanese touches, from Dover sole poached in seaweed butter to langoustine with buttermilk foam. Atera seats you at a counter around an open kitchen.
